Friday Creature

Gravits is the one who noticed this critter on the wall outside our favorite thai restaurant as we were walking back from lunch, so I'll let her attempt the identification. It's a huge version of whatever it is (hand-sized, unless you happen to play for the NBA). Once we get it IDed, go see what other varmints have turned up at the ark today.

My only plans for the weekend are to try to check out the forest of harleys down by the river. It's HOG Heaven in Chattanooga this weekend (the multitudes started rolling into town yesterday). The city is expecting 12-15,000 riders to descend upon us. Yee-haw.

looks like a Luna moth, based on a bit of googling. very cool!

Yes, I think it's a Luna moth too. And it was HUGE, I would say about 5-6" in diameter.

You don't see these very much but (s)he was just hangin' out on the side of Sawasdee.

Mine makes three votes for Luna.

Looks like it's unanimous. Thanks for the ID!

Very nice picture! The colors are very punchy.
Did this come straight from the camera, or did you tweak in Photoshop, or some other program?

Posted by: F-Stop at August 26, 2005 01:18 PM

I tweak just about everything in photoshop, because I'm not satisfied with my camera's handling of color. Usually I nudge the saturation up a bit and occasionally tinker with the other levels as well. I'm struggling with the saturation issue at the moment because of the wide variation I'm seeing in the displays on different monitors -- images that look fine on my laptop seem over-saturated on the monitor at work (I've calibrated both displays), and so on... I'd love to hear how others out there feel about this issue as I'm still working it all out...

I usually increase saturation by +5 on the image before optimizing for the web. If you compare closely the original with the optimized version you will see that color saturation really takes a hit in the optimization process. So increasing it some beforehand really is just an attempt to keep it as it looked before optimization. If your camera has the ability to shoot raw mode you might experiment with it. You have your choice of letting the camera develop the image for you shooting jpg or developing it yourself with a raw file. A raw file straight from the camera will always appear dull and lifeless so don't let that fool you into thinking it's a bad pic. It's a digital negative and totally up to you to bring it to life in PS.
